Wayang kulit is an Indonesian artform dating to the 10th century. During a performance, a light is used to cast the shadows of puppets onto a screen. Although the hand crafted shadow puppet offered in this listing is functional, the intricate details make it a wonderful display piece. This is truly a work of art and completely unique.
Multiple artists are typically needed to create one of these puppets. The body is made of water buffalo hide that was cut and detailed by hand, one hole at a time. After being painted, wooden rods were attached to the base and hands to complete the piece.
Although I am not certain of the character this particular puppet represents, I believe it to be Dewi Sinta, a princess and one of the central figures in the ancient Hindu tale Ramayana. This poem contains over 25,000 verses and it may require over 40 nights to tell the entire story using the shadow puppets.
The puppet itself has a height of 12 inches with the central rod extending 6 inches below.
