The cacti featured in this listing, Ferocactus wislizeni go by the common names of Arizona barrel cactus, Southwestern barrel cactus, candy barrel cactus and fishhook barrel cactus. Native to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico, these rare and large specimens would make wonderful accent specimens if placed in a rock garden and are equally as dramatic when displayed in pots.
This variety of barrel cactus is hardy to 10 degrees Fahrenheit and can flourish with very little water. It must be planted in sandy soil that drains extremely well and prefers full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade. These fishhook barrel cacti can easily grow to be over 2 feet in diameter and 3 feet high during their 50 to 100 year lifespan. Extreme care should be taken when handling and considering where these cacti are planted. The long and rigid spines can be very dangerous.
Regulating the amount of water these plants receive is key to raising a healthy fishhook barrel. Once planted, they should be watered deeply. They should only be watered thereafter if planted in an manner that prevents them from receiving natural rainfall, and even then only once every two to three weeks during summer and once every month for the balance of the year.
The two plants that are available are approximately 13 years old and were photographed in their 12 inch pots. Both are roughly 12 inches in diameter and 9 inches tall (including the length of their spines).
Each order will contain one of these plants. They will be shipped bare root (no pots or soil will be included).
