The four pieces of agate in this listing were found in Mississippi and in my opinion are unique when compared to agate found anywhere else in the world. All four of these semi precious stones display a combination of banding and cavities that are indicative of Mississippi agates. One piece is predominantly red in color while the other three display creamy tan and white banding.
I found the pieces while searching for fossils in the early 1990's. Though I am not the first person to ever find this type of agate in Mississippi, I was completely unaware of the possibility prior to seeing them in the creek bed that day. Ten years would pass before I saw a report of similar material being found.
These agates are relatively rare and their origin is still a bit of a mystery. The best guess is that these gems formed within the lava vent tubes of an ancient volcano once located in western Mississippi. These vents were exposed after millions of years of erosion, setting the material free.
The four agates in this listing range in sizes from approximately 1-1/4 X 1 X 1 inch to 1-3/4 X 1-1/2 X 1 inch. They have a combined weight of just over 5 ounces (145 grams).
