The Texas mountain laurel, also know as mescal bean and frijolillo, is a small tree native to central and west Texas as well as parts of Mexico and New Mexico. Prized for the large, fragrant purple blooms that appear in spring, this easy to grow ornamental is hardy to USDA zone 7 and is certain to become the focal point of any planting area. Fall is the ideal time of year to plant these trees.
Texas mountain laurel is an evergreen tree that routinely reaches a height of 15 feet and has a spread of 10 feet. They typically have multiple trunks and their slow growth rate make them great choices for use as bonsai specimens. These trees prefer rocky limestone soil, however they can be grown in any well draining soil that does not include clay. It is deer resistant and is EXTREMELY drought tolerant once established.
The violet flowers appear in early spring and are between 3 and 6 inches in length. The fragrance is very strong and resembles the smell of grape soda. The flowers are replaced by large seed pods that contain bright red seeds that can be used in jewelry. THESE SEEDS ARE TOXIC TO PEOPLE AND PETS WHEN INGESTED.
The plants shown growing in 5 gallon plastic containers in the listing photographs are the exact mountain laurels available. Each pot contains 4 mountain laurels (1 primary plant and 3 smaller plants). The primary plant in each pot will have a height of 22 inches and is mature (it is old enough to flower). These will be shipped with soil protecting their roots, however pots will not be included. A planting and growing guide will also accompany each shipment.
Shipping to any address within the contiguous United States (with the exception of California) is included in the listing price. We cannot ship these trees to destinations within California or those outside of the contiguous USA. These will be shipped using Federal Express Home Delivery.

Unfortunately, we lack the certifications required by the California Department Of Agriculture that would allow us to ship live plants to those residing in the state of California.

I have ordered live plants online before, but these came in spectacular condition. Much larger than I expected, healthy, wrapped up well. I was truly pleased! I planted them and both are doing well. I would definitely recommend these folks. We have to build up planting beds due to rocky soil and these have a great start. Great product.
