The ten fossilized crinoid stems in this listing were found in Central Texas and are longer, have more detail and are more colorful than most.
After dying approximately 300 million years ago at the bottom of a sea that covered much of Texas, these crinoids were silicified, or crystallized. Minerals slowly replaced the once living tissues of these creatures to create these very detailed casts that measure between 1-1/4 and 2 inches (3 and 5 cm).
Crinoids resembled plants, having a cup like structure called a "Calyx" positioned atop a stalk like body that was anchored to the ocean bottom. Small arms called "Cirri" extended from the stalk, grabbing nearby objects to further anchor the animal. Feather-like arms extended from the calyx, capturing food as it floated by. All of these stems have "cirrus scars", points where cirri emerged from the stalk, that are clearly visible.
