Antelope Horns milkweed is a perennial herb that has many common names and has a natural range stretching from Nebraska, to Ohio, down to Florida and West to Texas. The flowers of this plant are an important source of nectar for many butterfly and bee species and they are the preferred host plants for monarch caterpillars. June through November is the ideal time for planting these milkweed seeds.
This sun loving plant can tolerate partial shade, does not mind poor soil and is very drought tolerant. It grows to a maximum height of 2 feet and can produce as many as 10 separate stalks that are topped by white to greenish-yellow flowers. These flowers are absolutely stunning, even in the hottest of summers. After being pollinated, the flowers die and are replaced by large seed pods that rupture and release seeds.
The seeds were collected from wild plants growing on our Texas ranch in May of 2024. The seed pods were allowed to fully mature and open naturally before being harvested. To protect the seeds from the growth of harmful mold, latex gloves are worn any time the seeds or pods are being handled.
All parts of this plant can be toxic to humans and pets, so care should be taken when determining a planting area for the seeds. Monarch butterfly eggs are laid on these plants. Once hatched, the larvae protect themselves from predators by consuming the toxic milkweed leaves.
Each order will contain your choice of 50, 100 or 200 Antelope Horns milkweed seeds. The listing photo having a quarter for reference shows an example of 100 milkweed seeds.
In order to germinate, the seeds must experience a period of colder temperatures. If planted prior to November, the seeds will sprout naturally the following spring. If the seeds are planted after November, the overwintering can be duplicated using cold stratification. Instructions on these procedures are part of the planting and care guide included with every order.
Shipping to any address within the United States is included in the listing prices. These seeds cannot be shipped to destinations outside of the USA.
