These wonderfully preserved fossils are more than 66 million years old and were collected in the North Sulphur River located in Texas. These are great specimens that would be appreciated by anyone interested in dinosaurs or Earth's early history. They could also be used to create unique jewelry pieces.
These black fossils were removed from layers of hardened clay and have been washed and lightly scrubbed. Small residual amounts of clay are present on a portion of the pieces.
Each order will contain a set of ten baculite pieces, each set chosen at random from those that remain. Several of the sets have sold since this listing was originally published and the listing has been revised to show the five sets that remain as of August 6, 2019. Shipping to any address within the United States is included in the listing price.
Baculites were marine mollusks that had long cone-like shells. If you could unroll a modern day nautilus to form a straight shell, it would resemble a baculite. The lines that are visible on the sides of the fossilized shells are called "septa". They mark where the animal moved into a new and larger section as it grew, walling off the old section of the shell behind it.
