Beautifully displayed on a piece of the ancient seafloor where it once lived, this sea lily cup is one of the finest fossils of its type that I have ever seen. A relative of starfish and sea urchins, this sea lily, or Crinoid, was an animal that lived approximately 300 million years ago in a sea that covered what is now Central Texas.
Crinoids resembled plants, having a cup like structure called a "Calyx" positioned atop a stalk like body that was anchored to the ocean bottom. Feather-like arms extended from the calyx, capturing food as it floated by.
Six plates of this Crinoid calyx are visible, with five being fossilized in perfect position. The position of the plates and the orientation of the fossil combine to create a great three dimensional specimen. Additional Crinoid fragments can also be found on the top and bottom surfaces of the piece.
The overall dimensions of this item are approximately 2 X 1-3/4 X 3/4 inches (50 X 45 X 19 mm).
