Harmony Ranch Crafts was recently contacted by HGTV to discuss the Shou Sugi Ban wood burning technique. The resulting article can be found at the following address: https://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/design-101/what-is-shou-sugi-ban
The wood in this listing was originally part of a cabin located in the Texas Hill Country. After being removed, the pieces of rough hewn cedar were charred with a torch and then coated with a generous amount of 100% natural tung oil. This centuries old wood preserving technique, known as Shou Sugi Ban, gives the wood a rich and rustic appearance that would be perfect for a variety of projects. The pieces do not carry the smell of burned wood and the blackened surfaces will not readily rub off or leave marks.
Preparing the wood in this manner not only highlights the natural wood grain, it also provides a weatherproof and UV resistant finish that far outlasts any paint or stain. The oldest wooden building in existence was built using wood that had undergone the Shou Sugi Ban process. Built in the 8th century, the structure still stands in Japan today.
To provide the user with flexibility and a greater range of options, each square was given two finishes. One face of each piece has been charred deeply while the opposing sides were charred and scraped to reveal the wood grain.
Each piece measures roughly 2-3/4 inches X 2-1/2 inches inches and they are 5/8 of an inch thick. Being reclaimed lumber, some of the pieces have small nail holes and other minor imperfections.
