This driftwood sculpture was made using two separate pieces of driftwood found on the Texas coast. The wood has been completely shaped by nature and, with the exceptions of washing and joining the pieces together, they are as they were found.
There is more than one basis for naming this piece "From The Ashes".
When found, the shape of the primary driftwood piece immediately brought to mind images of a bird or dragon. Once it was joined to the base, the image of a rising phoenix became apparent to me.
The other significance of the name stems from when the two pieces were found. These were washed high onto the shore by Hurricane Harvey, and I found these two pieces along the middle Texas coast five days after the storm had passed. On the one hand, the arms, outstretched to the heavens, symbolizes the questions that all people ask when faced with such a natural disaster. But the piece also depicts defiance in the face of adversity, capturing the perseverance and tenacity of many that live along the Gulf coast.
The upright piece is joined to the base using a steel rod that is hidden behind the figure. The base is fitted with a recessed plastic collar allowing the upright piece to be removed, or positioned at different viewing angles, while remaining secure.
When assembled, this item measures 24 inches wide, 24 inches high and 12 inches deep (61 X 61 X 31 cm). The base measures 24 X 5 inches (61 X 13 cm).
