Cylindropuntia leptocaulis is a cold hardy shrub that is native to Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico. Going by the names of Christmas cholla, Christmas cactus, pencil cactus, rat tail cactus and tasajillo, it grows to a height between 2 and 5 feet tall, has slender jointed branches and can form a dense thicket in the wild. New growth is green, turning tan and developing a light bark with age. Spines between 1/2 and 1-1/2 inches cover the plant.

Small yellow flowers adorn the plant in spring and, when they drop off of the plant, tiny green fruit begin to grow. The fruit becomes larger through summer and turns red late in the year. The fruit stay on the cactus through the winter unless eaten by birds. The red fruit is the basis for many of the common plant names, since it appears to be a shrub covered in red ornaments each November and December. These cholla are hardy to USDA zone 5.

Each order will contain FIVE healthy cholla plants that will be shipped bare root as well as a planting and care guide. All of the cholla will measure between 8 and 12 inches in length, with single stemmed plants and those having multiple branches being included with each order. All of the plants will have well developed roots, with the listing photos showing 10 plants representative of all that are available.

Great plants, rooted well. Thank you!!

Thank you. They were planted the same day they arrived. I am really exciting to see them in the spring and summer.

Really cool, love it, seller great!

Arrived healthy. All four plants were over a foot long. Three with many small branches and one widely branched, almost as wide as it was tall.
