Vitex agnus–castus, commonly know as Vitex Tree, Texas Lilac and Chaste Tree, is a quick growing small tree or large shrub. Introduced to the United States in the 1600's for their medicinal properties, the vitex has continued to increase in popularity due to the long bluish-purple flowers they produce during the summer months.

The plant in this listing was grown from seed, is six years old and the exact tree is shown in photos two through six. It was photographed growing in a 15 gallon container and stands 35 inches above the soil. It has a spread measuring 32 inches in diameter and a trunk that is 1 inch in diameter at the base.

This tree will be shipped with a portion of the soil protecting the roots however the pot is not included. To reduce shipping costs, it will be packaged tightly within the box and the branches will be compressed. After being unpacked the branches will slowly unfold.

The "Shoal Creek" variety will reach a height of 15 feet in USDA zones 6 through 10. It will die to the ground each winter in zones 4 and 5, but will return from the roots each spring and grow up to 5 feet tall in a single season. In warmer areas, flowering will typically begin in late spring. Blooms appear a month or so later in colder areas. If the flowers are removed when they fade, a second blooming cycle, one lasting through early fall, will occur. It will naturally take the form of a spreading bush but can be easily shaped to form a more upright tree.

It may be planted in any type of soil, but do not locate it in an area where water pools or stands. Provide full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, to get the most flowers. Vitex will survive, but bloom much less, if planted in part shade. These are very drought tolerant once established, however watering occasionally during their first year is recommended.

Your plant may ship via Federal Express Home Delivery, UPS Ground or FedEx Smart Post.
