This is a rare opportunity to obtain a specimen that would typically only be seen on display at a museum. The tree providing the material for this fossil lived in what is now Texas approximately 50 million years ago, and of the many thousands of pounds of petrified wood I have collected over the last 45 years, it is the only piece of its type that I have found.
The larger section of petrified tree branch was preserved in remarkable detail. The interior of the specimen has a high silica content that allowed the ends to be polished after they were cut. A prominent knot as well as several small holes decorate the piece. It has a length of 11-3/4 inches (30cm) and is up to 3 inches (77mm) wide. The larger end measures 2-1/4 x 2 inches (57 x 49mm) and it is approximately 1-7/8 inches (47mm) in diameter at the smaller end. The weight is just shy of 3 pounds, 11 ounces (1.669kg).
