This piece of petrified wood is a very well preserved example of a now extinct tree species that lived 56 to 34 million years ago. Only found in a handful of Texas counties and Louisiana parishes, Mennegoxylon jonesii is more commonly known as "snakewood", as the cell structure resembles snake skin. I collected the piece from a location in Burleson County, Texas where the Yegua Formation, the only geologic layer that contains snakewood, was exposed. The museum quality specimen has been cut and polished at one end but all other sides have been left as found.
The piece is completely crystalized and the detailed cell structure is clearly visible on two opposing sides. It measures 2.8 x 1.6 x 1.1 inches (70 x 42 x 27mm) and weighs 4.86 ounces (138 grams).
