The Mardi Gras doubloons in this listing span a 55 year period and are pieces thrown between 1965 and 2020. These coins could be the basis for starting a new collection or used to expand an existing set, framed to create a unique conversation piece or simply used as part of a Mardi Gras themed event.
Your choice of 50, 100 or 200 doubloons will be shipped with each order. A very small portion of the available pieces are shown in the listing photos.
Each year, a Mardi Gras krewe (the social organization sponsoring a given parade) chooses a theme that is reflected in the floats and on all that is thrown to the crowd along the route - including doubloons like these. The anodized aluminum coins were first introduced as "throws" in 1960 by the Krewe of Rex and have remained the most coveted item thrown from a Mardi Gras float ever since. Doubloons are also tossed by a portion of the smaller social groups that march in the parades.
A typical doubloon features the name and emblem of a krewe on the front, while the reverse will depict the parade theme. The year of the parade in which the coin is thrown may be noted on the front or reverse of the 1-1/2 inch diameter coins.
The majority of the doubloons in this listing were thrown in parades that traveled routes in New Orleans or Metairie, however a small portion are throws from other Louisiana and Mississippi locations. Orders may contain duplicate doubloons, however I will do my best to minimize them.
