A native of Texas, Mexico and several Caribbean countries, Mammillaria prolifera is a highly sought after succulent that is very easy to grow and keep happy. The plant forms dense clusters and produces a multitude of cream colored flowers that are followed by bright red edible fruit. Difficult to find in the size offered here, this cactus would be appreciated by serious collectors and hobby growers alike.
The listing photos were taken on March 12, 2024 and show the exact cactus cluster that is available growing in a 6 inch container. It has 16 conspicuous stems as well as several smaller stems that measure less than 1/4 of an inch. The plant will be shipped without soil or pot. Although flowers may not be present at the time of shipment, the fruit will be left in place to provide seeds for propagation.
Each Mammillaria prolifera stem can grow to be 4 inches in length and clusters will quickly increase in size. Plant in standard cactus soil and provide them with a full day of bright indirect sunlight or morning through midday direct sun. Water once every 2 weeks when daytime temperatures are above 60 degrees. Reduce watering as temperatures cool and do not water during winter. Although it is best to protect these cacti from freezing, they may survive brief periods at lower temperatures as long as they are completely dry.
PLEASE NOTE: We do not use heat packs and we are not responsible for damage related to the plants being exposed to cold temperatures.
