The crinoid stems in this listing are fossilized portions of animals that lived approximately 300 million years ago in a sea that covered most of Texas. These are sometimes called "Texas Pop Rocks" or "Indian Pop Rocks" because they can explode, much like popcorn, when thrown into an open fire. They have also been referred to as "Indian Beads" since they are known to have been worn by the indigenous people of North America.
These crinoid stems are not the soft, limestone casts that are more commonly found. They were preserved when silicate minerals replaced the crinoid tissues giving many of them a somewhat crystalline appearance. They are also more colorful than many other crinoid fossils and are found in shades of red, orange, purple, yellow, white, tan and gray. These fossils would be appreciated by the seasoned collector, educator or anyone interested in a piece of the Earths prehistoric past.
Each order will contain your choice of 8 ounces, 1 pound or 2 pounds of these fossilized stem pieces. The listing photos show examples of the volume that might be contained in each order size. A randomly selected variety of sizes will make up each order. Individual pieces will have lengths of 5 to 45mm (.20 to 1-3/4 inches) and they will have diameters of 5 to 15mm (.20 to .60 inches).
