This large and interesting piece is the root section of an eastern red cedar tree that once grew on a property near our Central Texas ranch. It has been cleaned, trimmed, sanded and cut in a way that allows it to stand in an inverted position, with the roots up.
The stump was collected from an area that was logged for red cedar in the early 1900's. Given the location of the stump and the overall condition when found, this tree was likely felled during that period of time. The less resistant sapwood has decayed away, leaving only the denser and more weather resistant red hardwood.
This solid and unique item stands 33-1/2 inches tall and weighs slightly over 29 pounds. The roots extend out to cover an area measuring roughly 19 x 18 inches.
The colors displayed on the surface of the piece change depending on the side being viewed and flowing lines, natural troughs and recesses can be found throughout. There is a 2 x 1-1/2 inch hole present that provides access to a cavity that is roughly 2 inches deep.
