This piece of gypsum was collected from the Pecos River valley of Southeastern New Mexico and contains deep red and pink Pecos Diamonds. In addition to those visible on the surface, there are undoubtedly many more contained within this host rock.
Approximately 300 million years ago the Permian Sea evaporated, leaving behind the minerals that were dissolved in the water. This formed sheets of gypsum with embedded Pecos Diamonds. When the soft gypsum becomes exposed, it erodes and releases the Pecos Diamonds. The piece offered in this listing clearly illustrates that part of the process and, if left left outdoors, natural rainfall will continue to expose more of these tiny crystals.
The stone measures 7-3/4 x 7 x 2-1/4 inches and weighs over 6-1/2 pounds. Despite the fractures, this piece is still quite solid.
