Jatropha Cathartica, Large Caudiciform Plant - Free US Shipping

Sorry, this item has sold.

Jatropha cathartica, also know as Berlander's Nettlespurge, is a Euphorbia that is native to the Rio Grande valley of Texas and small portions of Mexico. These flowering plants are prized by collectors and produce a large caudex, a swollen root segment that is used hold water.

The plant being offered is shown in the listing photographs that were taken on November 23, 2021. It has a caudex measuring 4 inches in diameter and stands 10 inches from the soil to the top of the highest branch (not including the bloom stalks). It is a healthy and magnificent specimen. The plant will be shipped without soil or pot.

Jatropha cathartica grows to a height of around 12 inches and the caudex may reach a diameter of 8 inches. Their growing season may begin as early as February and typically lasts until November. It may bloom at any point during the growing season, however most of the bright red flowers appear during summer. The flowers are followed by seed pods that are green with yellow stripes. They loose all stems and leaves when dormant for the winter months.

This unusual plant is easy to grow indoors or out. Provide them with plenty of bright, indirect sunlight or place in a location that receives direct morning sun. Plant them in soil that drains well and contains at least 25% sand. Water once every three weeks while the plant is active and withhold water completely when dormant. They will survive temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, however may be damaged as a result. Keeping them at temperatures above 50 degrees is strongly recommended.

Shipping to any address within the contiguous United States, with the exception of those in California, is included in the listing prices. We cannot ship this plant to destinations within California or to those falling outside of the contiguous USA.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not use heat packs and we are not responsible for damage related to the plant being exposed to cold temperatures. The listing photos were taken in October and may be dormant (no foliage) when shipped.
