The antelope-horn milkweed (Asclepias asperula) is a perennial herb that has many common names and an natural range that extends from southern Idaho, to Nebraska, South to Texas and West to Arizona. The flowers of this plant bloom in early spring and are an important source of nectar for many butterfly and bee species.
This sun loving milkweed can tolerate partial shade, does not mind poor soil and is very drought tolerant. It grows to a maximum height of 2 feet and can produce as many as 10 separate stalks that are topped by white to greenish-yellow flowers. These flowers are absolutely stunning, even in the hottest of summers. After being pollinated, the flowers die and are replaced by large seed pods that rupture and release seeds.
Antelope-horn forms a deep-running taproot that grows larger with age. The stalks that grow from this taproot are very loosely attached and are removed prior to shipment. The plant should readily re-sprout within 2 weeks of being planted if temperatures are warm enough. They may also bloom this year.
It is worthy of mentioning that all parts of this plant can be toxic to humans and pets, so care should be taken when determining where these are planted.
The antelope horn taproots offered in this listing are 3 to 5 years old and measure between 5 and 8 inches in length. The bare roots shown in the listing photographs are representative of those that will be shipped. A planting guide will also accompany each order.
