The sago palm (Cycas revoluta) , also known as Japanese funeral palm and palm cycad, is an easy to care for and versatile plant that is well suited for growing indoors or out, in planters or in the ground.
Not a palm at all, the sago is actually a cycad that has existed since prehistoric times. In ideal conditions they may reach a height of 10 feet, a width of 8 feet and can live to be 200 years of age.
The exact sago palm being offered is shown in the listing photographs. This a very large plant that is 11 years old and weighs approximately 35 pounds. It has only recently begun to grow this years set of fronds, making this the ideal time to ship the sago. The palm has a trunk that measures 7-1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point and stands 24 inches above the soil. It was photographed growing in a 7 gallon container. Once the fronds have filled out for the year, the palm will stand approximately 3 feet tall and have a spread of approximately 3 feet.
The final photo shows a shallow split that exists near the base of the trunk. This wound has completely healed and is not a threat to the health of the plant.
Sago palms require little special care, with over watering and exposure to below freezing temperatures being the main threats to their survival. They are surprisingly drought tolerant and can go more than a month without water. They should be planted in well draining soil that is allowed to completely dry between watering. In our experience, these plants do best when provided bright indirect sunlight or direct early through midday sunlight. Ours have scorched when exposed to the direct late afternoon sunlight of Central Texas. We are located in hardiness zone 8b and have had no issues growing these plants in the ground outdoors. While they do need to be protected from freezing temperatures, our king sago palms have survived temperatures as low as 18 degrees by simply having a blanket draped over them.
This palm will be shipped without a pot or soil.
